A few years ago after a surgery I had, My doctor prescribed me 6 weeks of bed rest. To some this sounds like a vacation but I thought it was going to be torture.

What was I going to do for six weeks? I was talking to my mother shortly thereafter and she suggested that I try cross stitching. I was a little skeptical at first because I have tried knitting in the past and I just couldn’t grasp it, but with my new found free time I decided to give cross stitching a go. She came over and gave me a speed course in cross stitching and also gave me a few cross stitching patterns.

Once I felt comfortable with my cross stitching practice run I hunkered down and began a cross stitching pattern of an owl. It was a bit difficult, but only because cross stitching techniques for my owl pattern had to be precise. When you start the stitching in one direction, the rest of the pattern must also be in that direction for shadow purposes. I completed my owl pattern in a few days and liked my owl. I named him “hootie” and he now rests on our mantle. With plenty of time left on my bed rest order, I kept going.

The cross stitching was not only a good way to pass time but it was almost theraputic. I really began growing patience. I would put the radio on and just sit up in bed cross stitching different patterns.

My husband soon became a fan of the different patterns I had completed and actually asked me to teach him how to cross stitch. He picked up on it rather quickly so we decided to play a little cross stitching game.

We had two patterns of the same image, A bloodhound puppy. It was the first difficult cross stitching pattern that would test our new skills.

We both took the better part of two weeks to complete the cross stiching assignment but once we did we were eager to see what people thought. Without revealing which of us completed which pattern, We brought the two finished productions to my mother.

My mother, the cross stitching expert she is, said both could be better. But eventually decided that my husbands cross stitching was better! I couldn’t believe it! We opted not to search for a second opinion and decided to begin a round 2 of our cross stitch game. We are currently stitching a pattern of a grassy hill with a tree in the middle. Here’s hoping I win this one, if not I may have to find a new hobby! Atleast I can cook better than my husband.
